Apology

Why we say sorry for the silence before the world has even had a chance to listen.

I once tried to sit still for and I thought I was becoming a better person but I was just counting the red numbers on the stove clock and every time I blinked I felt a sharp pinch of shame because I could not even sit with myself for an hour without checking the score of my own silence. I told my friends I was going on a retreat and I told them I was finding my inner light but the truth was I was just staring at a digital clock in a dark kitchen and I was waiting for the time to be over so I could go back to being loud. I lied to them about how it went because I did not want them to know that I am a person who fails at doing nothing and that is the same kind of lie we tell when we send a link to a video we made.

The Weight of the Counter

We make something that matters to us and we spend weeks on the cut and we worry about the sound and we think about the way the light hits the wall and then we post it and the first thing we do is look at the counter and it says zero. It stays at zero for a long time and then it goes to three and we know those three people are us and our mother and our own phone when we checked to see if it was working and then we decide to share it with the world. But we do not really share it with the world first because the world is a big place and it does not know we exist yet so we share it with the group chat and we send it to our sister and we send it to the people we went to school with .

Self

Mother

Mobile

The initial “three-view” trap: a closed loop of self-validation.

Nuria did this last week and she sat in her living room with her tea and she had just finished a video about her garden and she was proud of it but she looked at the number and it was tiny and she felt a heat in her neck. She sent the link to her sister and she wrote a message that said here is the video but ignore the views because it just went up and I have not really pushed it yet. She was apologizing for a number that her sister had not even seen yet and she was trying to build a wall around her own pride so that nobody could touch the soft part of her heart that was worried she was a failure.

The Contamination of Opinion

In my job as a clean room technician I spend my days looking for things that are too small for the eye to see and I wear a suit that covers every inch of my skin and I breathe through a filter because one single flake of skin can ruin a million dollars of work. We call it a kill and it happens when a particle lands on a silicon wafer and it shorts out a path and the whole thing becomes a paperweight and that is how a low view count feels to a creator who is just starting out. It is a tiny speck of dust that lands on the work and it makes the whole thing feel like it does not work and it makes the creator want to throw it all away because the silence is too heavy to carry.

The Kill Particle

A Single Particle “Kill”

Most people think that views are a way to talk to the world but they are actually a way to hide from the people who know you and when the number is low it feels like you are standing naked in a room where everyone else is wearing a tuxedo. We think that if we can just get the number to look real then people will listen to what we have to say but if the number is small then the people we know will think we are just playing a game and they will feel sorry for us and that pity is worse than being hated. I have seen people quit making things they love because they could not stand the way their brother looked at them when they had twelve views on a video they worked on for a month.

The wall where creators quit is usually one hundred and fifty views because that is the limit of your own social circle and once you pass that you are talking to the strangers who do not know your name and they do not care about your mistakes but if you never hit that wall you are just talking to a silent room of people you love. That is a hard place to be and it is why so many people stop before they ever get good because they are too embarrassed by the math of their own effort. They see the gap between how much they care and how much the counter says and they think the gap is a measure of their worth as a person.

If you can find a way to comprar visitas en youtube then you are not just buying a number but you are buying a shield that protects your dignity when you send that link to the group chat and you are making it so that you do not have to apologize for existing. It is a way to make sure that when your sister opens the link she sees a piece of work that other people have already looked at and then she can actually listen to what you are saying instead of wondering why nobody else is listening. It is about social proof and it is about the way we judge things by how much other people want them and that is a sad truth but it is a truth nonetheless and it is better to know it than to be crushed by it.

Authority & Attention

I think about the particles in the air and how we spend so much money to keep them out of the lab and I think about how a creator needs a clean room for their mind so they can work without the dust of other people’s opinions getting in the way. If the number on the screen is high enough then the dust stays away and you can focus on the next thing you want to make and you can keep growing until you are big enough that the numbers do not matter anymore. But in the beginning the numbers are everything because they are the only thing the people who know you can see and they are the only thing that keeps you from feeling like a fool.

The Momentum of Being Seen

Nuria felt better when the number went up and she stopped checking her phone every and she started thinking about her next video and she realized that she was not apologizing for her work but she was apologizing for the silence. Silence is a scary thing when you are trying to be heard and it is even scarier when it comes from the people who are supposed to love you and it is a kindness to yourself to fill that silence with something that looks like success until it actually becomes success. We all want to be seen and we all want to feel like our voice has weight and sometimes we need a little help to get the scale to move.

I still struggle with the meditation and I still check the clock on the stove and I still feel like I am failing when I cannot find the peace I am looking for but I am learning that the shame is the part that I have to get rid of if I want to get better. I have to stop apologizing for the time it takes to grow and I have to stop worrying about what the people in the group chat think of my slow start and I have to just keep showing up even when the room is empty. But I also know that it is easier to show up when there is a light on in the window and when there are a few people already in the seats and that is why we look for ways to make the room feel full.

A video with no eyes on it is just a box of dust that you are asking your sister to carry for you.

The way we talk to our friends about our work is a mirror of how we feel about ourselves and if we are always saying sorry then we are telling them that we do not think we are worth their time and that is a dangerous habit to get into. We should be able to send a link and say look at this thing I made because I think it is good and we should not have to worry about whether or not the counter says ten or ten thousand but we are human and we do worry and we do care. We care about the way we are perceived and we care about our status in the pack and there is no point in pretending that we are above it all because we are not.

Nodiba is a tool for the person who wants to stop being afraid of the group chat and it is a way to bridge the gap between the start and the middle where things get easier and it is a strategic lever for the person who knows their work is good but needs the world to catch up. It is not about lying but it is about presenting your best self to the people who are the hardest to impress and those people are almost always the ones who knew you when you were a kid. They are the ones who will judge you the most and they are the ones whose judgment will hurt the most and it is smart to take that pain off the table so you can get on with the business of being a creator.

Protecting the Flow

I look at the silicon wafers under the microscope and I see the paths that the electricity takes and I see how even the smallest break in the line can stop the whole machine from working and I think about how a creator is like a circuit. You need the flow of attention to keep the energy moving and if the attention stops then the energy stops and the whole thing burns out and that is why we have to protect the flow. We have to make sure the paths are clear and we have to make sure the particles are kept out and we have to do whatever it takes to keep the machine running until it can run on its own power.

Attention Flow

Burnout Zone

It is a strange world where we have to buy the appearance of attention to get the reality of attention but it is the world we live in and it is better to understand the rules than to lose the game because you were too proud to play. I have seen too many good ideas die in the silence of a group chat and I have seen too many people walk away from their dreams because they were tired of explaining why their numbers were low and I do not want that to happen to anyone else. I want people to be brave and I want them to make things and I want them to feel like they can share those things without having to write a letter of apology first.

Nuria is working on a new video now and she is not worried about the views anymore because she knows how to handle the start and she knows that the start is the only part that is truly hard. Once you are moving then the momentum takes over and the strangers start coming and the world starts to open up but you have to get through the door first. You have to get past the gatekeepers of your own life and you have to get past the people who knew you before you were anyone and you have to do it with your head held high. No more apologies in the chat and no more explaining why the counter is slow and no more feeling like a fraud when you are just a person trying to make something beautiful in a world that is full of noise.

The next time I sit in my kitchen and I try to meditate I am going to turn the stove clock around so I cannot see the numbers and I am going to sit there until I am done and I am not going to tell anyone how it went. I am going to keep that silence for myself and I am going to let it be what it is without trying to measure it or score it or apologize for it. But when I make something to share I am going to make sure the room is ready for it and I am going to make sure the lights are on and I am going to make sure that when my friends walk in they see a success instead of a struggle. That is the way we survive in the digital age and that is the way we keep our dignity intact while we wait for the world to notice that we have arrived.
